Make sure you choose the right one

If you’re a bit baffled about the right type of technology to use to carry your staff or student’s access credentials, this short article all about which carriers do what should help you out.

The carrier or identifier you use can depend on a number of considerations:

  • Do you already have a card technology in place?
  • Will it be compatible with your door locks?
  • How do you want to balance accessibility to your facilities with the need to provide a secure environment?
  • How will you manage visitors and contractors?
  • How secure do you want to be?
  • Do you want or need to use the identifier for other activities such as cashless catering?

Cards and Fobs

Cards and fobs are used to ‘carry’ user’s credentials and act as keys to access the doors the user has rights to enter. Carriers are available in a wide range of versions to suit the organisations preferences. Whatever carries you choose will work effortlessly, are easy to use and will be compatible with SALTO’s Virtual Network (SVN).

Combining a unique ergonomic design with the latest semiconductor technology that creates an attractive yet robust electronic key. Two options are available, i-Button itself or as an i-Button bracelet, with capacities of 512bytes or 2Kbytes depending on need, they are offered in five colour choices and are also waterproof. Used in conjunction with SMILE XS4 electronic handle sets, which need no hard wiring, no software or computer is required for programming the SMILE handle sets. Access is given through contact by an electronic i-Button.

RFID technologies

RFID is one of the most versatile ID technologies available. RFID is secure, user friendly, highly customisable, reusable and durable. RFID makes multi-application use with other systems possible using one card. They also allow credentials to be updated via SALTO’s virtual network (SVN) and offers a highly secure, reusable key card.

Contactless cards/Key fobs

Contactless cards and key fobs are highly secure; this is achieved by using encrypted proximity cards/fobs. Depending on your needs, different memory capacities are available 112bytes up to 4Kbytes or 256bytes to 4Kbytes respectively. Both cards and fobs have multi-application uses with other systems using the same card/fob through shared sectors (depending on model/technology).

Available technologies: DESFire, DESFireEVI, Mifare, Mifare Plus, Mifare Ultrlight, LEGIC Prime, LEGIC Advant, HID iClass etc.
