Don't under estimate the importance of maintenance

Wednesday, 22nd April, 2015

You have your building secured, you’re delighted with your new access control solution, it’s easy to use, you know exactly who is in the building, where they are and you now have powerful management reports to hand to help you effectively manage your premises and plan for future needs. Life is good!

But did you think about maintenance?

When you bought your new system did you also buy a maintenance contract? If you did that’s brilliant and you probably don’t need to read any further! If you didn’t you should read on!

As you depend on your access control solution for the safety and security of premises, staff, students and visitors it would make sense to have it working to its optimum 100% of the time. You may also need to have a maintenance contact under the terms and conditions of your insurance policy and failure not to have support could jeopardise your insurance or invalidate any claims you need to make.

What to consider

Maintenance contracts should cover hardware and any management software needed to run the system, this should provide technical support in the event of any problems occurring. Check your supplier offers good SLAs to that will meet your business needs and that your whole access control solution is covered, including any bespoke integrations between differing systems such as Active Directory, SIMS or CCTV and fire alarm systems. You also need to check that software upgrades are included in the maintenance cost rather than be a chargeable extra. This will ensure that any new features are also available to you.

You may also want to consider a preventative maintenance package as an add-on to your standard maintenance. This ensures that, much like a car MOT, your system is checked over at least once a year.

Peace of mind

Like most things in life you get what you pay for, so it is worthwhile making sure you are happy with the level of support on offer, and that you are clear about what is covered and that cover is sufficient for not only your business needs, but satisfies your insurance policy terms and conditions. That way you will be confident that your access control solution will give optimum performance 100% of the time.
