Are you a busy facilities manager?

Friday, 3rd March, 2017

We all understand managing your building(s) is a busy and time-consuming job with many different functions coming under a facilities manager’s remit.

Building security is often once such area; even if your company has a dedicated security manager, you’ll still have some influence in this area and will often work closely together.

Building security covers, in the main, door access, CCTV, intruder and fire alarms and is essential to properly ensure your business is fully protected, not just your premises but the people working there, visitor and your business assets need to be adequately protected too. You may also need to make sure you are fully compliant to meet your insurance obligations.

Traditionally these core security solutions have been run as disparate systems, sometimes supplied by different companies. This is all changing and it’s advances in technology that is allowing facilities and security managers to develop a more unified approach to protecting their building(s) by leveraging the flexibility open architecture can bring.

This unified approach means security operators will no longer have multiple monitors to view, no more jumping from your video surveillance monitors and then back to your access control system to investigate a live threat or a past event.

Obviously easy navigation, fewer systems to manage and better workflows are a big benefit of bringing everything together, but don’t forget the benefits that improved reporting offers. Having good management information will help you continually review and refine your security strategy based on solid information. Integration, therefore, offer much greater flexibility, is more cost effective and brings a better way to future proof your building security.

A note of caution – make sure your systems integrator has a good understanding of the IT side of things and is willing to work closely with your IT department.  This is to ensure that things like IP cameras present no vulnerability as a potential weak point in your security; after all, you don’t want to physically secure your building only to find someone has hacked in via the back door so to speak!
